Employee training in the European tourism industry needs to be improved, says the EU's high-level group on tourism and employment.

The group, which recently reported to the European Commission, says that tourism could create between 2.2 million and 3.3 million new jobs in the EU by 2010. The sector is likely to grow faster than the economy as a whole, increasing its turnover by 2.5-4 per cent a year.

The group also says that greater business expertise is needed to take more account of guests' needs, transport facilities should be improved and the principles of sustainable development should be integrated into development plans and strategies.

The Commission will report on the matter to the European Parliament and Council.
