Help for Romania and Russia

Keywords: Eastern Europe, Training, Human resource development, Steel industry, Urban regeneration

An inter-ministerial task force of eight senior Romanian officials has visited the UK to study the latest thinking on human-resource development in the EU. The week-long visit was financed under the EU Phare programme of help to central and eastern Europe, and organized by a UK-based consultancy firm, IMC Consulting. The visit included discussions with the Department for Education and Employment, Investors in People, the Institute of Personnel and Development, Derby Chamber of Commerce, Derby Training and Enterprise Council, Capita Grosvenor Careers Services, Sheffield New Deal Employment Initiative, the Scottish Qualifications Authority, Marks and Spencer and JCB Ltd.

Money will be provided for 20 Romanian companies to develop their human-resource development policies. Ten firms will go on to receive help in implementing them. The project will also help the Romanian Government to promote appropriate human-resource development policies and increase the quality and range of training available through local training providers.

Meanwhile, IMC Consulting has also helped local government in Russia to regenerate areas hit by the decline of the coal industry. The firm has organized a study tour to the UK for Russian mayors to see how areas of Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire have coped with the decline of their coal and steel industries. The visit was financed by the British Government's Know How Fund.
