Regionalization of training brings benefits

Keywords Vocational training, Unemployment, Eastern Europe

Regionalizing responsibility for vocational training and action to combat unemployment brings real benefits, but regionalization is not in itself a cure for all economic ills. This was the main conclusion of a conference on training and employment in the EU applicant countries of Central and Eastern Europe, organized by the European Training Foundation and the Committee of the Regions. Delegates agreed that the candidate countries will need help to build new institutions, able to implement regional development and the regionalization of employment and vocational education and training systems. The conference recommended that a European network be set up to disseminate good practice on regionalism. But delegates also accepted that regionalism may be inappropriate in some of the smaller countries.
