More than 70 per cent of colleges achieved or surpassed their funding target in 1997-98, according to performance indicators published by the Further Education Funding Council (FEFC).

The performance indicators, published for 432 colleges in the further-education sector, also show:

  typical growth of 5 per cent in part-time student numbers between 1996-97 and 1997-98;

  a retention rate of 87 per cent for full-time students, and of 84 per cent for part-time students, in 1997-98; and

• •

  a 6 per cent increase in achievement rates over the past three years.

Five indicators are published for each college, covering achievement of funding target, change in student numbers, retention rates, achievement rates and contribution to national targets.

David Melville, FEFC chief executive, said: "As we approach fundamental changes to the post-16 education and training sector, it is essential that the standards agenda is continually addressed. These indicators not only show how individual colleges are progressing, but how the sector as a whole is responding. The data show that further education is making major steps forward in raising its standards of education and training."
