A series of deadlines to speed the achievement of an information society for all has been set by Mrs Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Education and Culture. She believes that:

  By the end of this year, all schools should have Internet access. Multimedia resources and support services, including information and education resources on the Web, should be available to all teachers and students.

  By the end of 2002, all teachers should have their own computers and be capable of using the Internet and multimedia resources. All pupils should have rapid access to the Internet in the classroom.

  By the end of 2003, all school leavers should be fully conversant with digital technology.

Mrs Reding urges that services available online should have a European flavour. Pupils should be taught to develop a critical approach to the Internet, and be able to distinguish information from advertising and fact from fiction.

The European Commission wishes to strengthen the European Schoolnet project, which already covers more than 500 schools in Europe. Schoolnet involves the commission, 20 education ministries in the EU, the European Free Trade Association countries and certain EU applicant nations. Mrs Reding also said the commission would emphasize lifelong training and use of new technology in the latest phase of the EU Socrates, Leonardo and Youth programmes.
