"Wish list" on research

Keywords Research, Funding, European parliament

Better university training for researchers is among the recommendations of a report on research in Europe, supported by Euro-MPs. The European Parliament's Industry Committee has adopted the report, which also insists on the need for more researchers in Europe, improved mobility and higher salaries for researchers, and creation of an environment more supportive of research in Europe. In addition, the report calls for the networking of "centres of excellence" and the introduction of an EU patent. The report urges the Commission and EU member states to inform the European public more fully on the need for research. MEPs also invite the member states to spend at least 3 per cent of their national wealth on research.

In a separate development, the Commission has decided to grant 80 million euros to national research and education networks, to help them upgrade their Internet infrastructure. The aim is to promote a high-speed, high-capacity Internet connecting the national research and education networks in the EU and 16 other countries involved in the project – Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Switzerland. The new world-class network will be fully operational early next year and will connect more than 700,000 European researchers.
