Concern that only 1 per cent of European students in higher education take part in Erasmus exchange schemes has been expressed by Euro-MPs. They want to see more publicity for Erasmus, to encourage greater take-up. They also favour broader implementation of the European Credit Transfer System, to improve recognition of academic qualifications. The Euro-MPs were commenting on a European Commission study on the socio-economic background of Erasmus students, which shows that 57 per cent have financial problems during their year studying abroad. On average, Erasmus students receive 120 euros a month for seven months abroad. Students with budget problems are most often from countries where state funding for students is lowest. The MEPs believe that Erasmus support should take more account of a student's social and economic situation.
