An innovative project which takes young people into schools to work alongside pupils and staff has received financial backing from the EU. The scheme, administered by Wolverhampton College, involves candidates aged 17-20 undergoing training in subjects such as first aid, security, drug awareness, personal safety, handling aggression and basic counselling. They are then allocated to a school where they help to provide a safe and caring environment for pupils. The pilot programme, which has been running for two years, is the first of its kind in Europe. It was set up with the backing of the European Social Fund. Jane Williams, Wolverhampton College principal, said: "This is one of many examples of close collaboration between the college and local schools, to the mutual benefit of college students, school pupils and the entire community."
