Engineer, designer and entrepreneur James Dyson, famous for inventing the bagless vacuum cleaner, is urging the brightest and best people to follow him into engineering and technology. Launching the "Recognizing Excellence" campaign, he proclaimed engineering to be the profession for the creative and gifted. He told the Welsh National Convention of Excellence in Engineering and Technology: "It is astonishing that designing, engineering and manufacturing are not perceived as being creative. Everybody in the industry creates things all day long. We need to care about industry and nurture manufacturing. Then our creative engineering designers can really be creative." The campaign is intended to raise the awareness of employers of engineers about the business benefits of encouraging and supporting the professional development of their people.
