Researchers on the move
Researchers on the move
The European Commission is keen to encourage academic researchers to work in industry and in European countries other than their own. It particularly wants them to move to and from Europe's less-developed regions, and the candidate countries for EU accession. To promote these aims, the Commission proposes to:
- •
improve information about vacancies through an Internet portal linking national and Commission sites;
- •
improve the collection of statistics and studies on the mobility of researchers;
- •
create special centres to help researchers to deal with the legal, administrative and practical requirements of moving to another European country;
- •
set up a network of national ombudsmen to handle complaints from researchers;
- •
encourage member states, regions, research centres and academic institutions to improve their advertising of research posts internationally, and to require a minimum ratio of foreign researchers and a gender balance on selection committees.
There is financial support for researcher mobility in the EU's sixth framework programme for research and development.
