British Computer Society promotes IT careers to schools

The British Computer Society (BCS) is producing a series of posters and leaflets for careers events and careers advisers, aimed at encouraging young people to consider information-technology (IT) careers. The initial part of the project, overseen by the BCS schools expert panel, includes four posters and three general leaflets, while further leaflets on specific jobs in information and communications technology (ICT) will be produced shortly. The set will be expanded to cover wider career opportunities.

"We are now preparing a proposal for the BCS careers policy", said Aline Cumming, who initially chaired the work on behalf of the schools expert panel. "The scope is wide and should ultimately cover the whole spectrum, from competitions in primary schools through to continuing professional development. The first deliverable is likely to be careers pages on the BCS Web site. Other plans include liaison with careers organizations and careers advisers to answer the question, 'What is a career in ICT really like?"'
