Euro-MPs back extension for Media programmes

Euro-MPs back extension for Media programmes

The European Parliament culture committee has backed the extension of the EU Media Plus and Media Training programmes to 31 December 2006. Both programmes are currently due to end on 31 December 2005. The aim of the extension is to ensure continuity until a new generation of EU measures for the audiovisual industry takes effect in 2007.

The changes would give the Media Plus programme a total budget of 435.6 million as compared to the 350 million initially planned for 2001-2005, while Media Training would receive 57.4 million as compared to the 50 million previously envisaged. However, MEPs want the budget for the first programme to be increased by a further 18 million and for the second by a further 2 million, to take more account of EU enlargement.
