Cleanability awards recognise user-friendly buildings

Architects, designers, facilities and property management companies as well as building occupiers or owners and, of course, cleaning contractors are being given the chance to submit their premises in the Greater London area for one of the unique 1997/98 Building Cleanability Awards.

The Award scheme is conceived and promoted by the UK cleaning industry's Livery Company, the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners. It aims to focus attention on the cleaning needs and "cleanability" of all commercial and public buildings, at all stages of design, construction and operational management, factors which will not only enhance the "user-friendliness" of the building but also, ultimately, produce savings in operational costs.

Building on the success of last year's pilot scheme, which resulted in six City of London buildings receiving Cleanability Awards or Commended certificates, the 1997/98 competition will be open to any building of 20,000 square feet or more, located inside the M25 around London, and will cover eight different building categories, namely: public, commercial, health, education, transport, heritage, retail and leisure. The competition is open to old and new buildings alike, which will be assessed against a wide range of design and material criteria, covering both the inside and outside of each building nominated.

The competition is being sponsored by the British Cleaning Council, the co-ordinating body for the multi-billion pound UK cleaning industry, through a special grant of £15,000 to the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners, one of its 15 member bodies. The grant is in accordance with the Council's practice of providing financial support to projects initiated by its member bodies which will help improve cleanliness or cleanability standards as well as increase awareness of the industry's contribution to the environment.

Nominations for the 1997/98 Awards will be accepted through to the end of January and, following assessment visits early in 1998, Award certificates will be presented to the winners of each category in April/May 1998 at a special presentation function.

Nomination forms and further information can be obtained by calling the Awards office on: 01962 864138.
