Maintenance spending
Total expenditure on maintenance in the UK rose 6.4 per cent in 1996 to £38,386 million. This accounts for over of the country's gross domestic product.Output from the building maintenance sector now represents more than the output from the agriculture and mining industries put together. The total value of maintenance expenditure at constant prices rose 3.6 per cent between 1995 and 1996, but is still 7 per cent down on the peak level of 1989.The strongest growth has come from the private non-housing sector which rose 14 per cent between 1995 and 1996.
