New services from the National Monuments Record

New services from the National Monuments Record

From Monday 3 November 1997, access to England's heritage archive will be faster and easier.

  • A new free listed buildings information service is launched.

  • priority services provide information within three days on any aspect of the buildings, archaeology, or air photographs of England; and

  • Online order forms will provide an easy enquiry route via the Internet.

The standard free NMR enquiry service still remains, providing information within 15 working days; meanwhile, prices for laser copies and air photographic priority services have been reduced.

The NMR contains over 7 million items covering the architecture and archaeology of England. They include complete coverage of the country in air photographs; detailed information on buildings and archeological sites; and historic photographs of towns and villages throughout England.

The new services are:

  • Listed Building Information Service: call 0171 208 8221 for statutory information on any of the 450,000 listed buildings in England. By the end of the next working day, the NMR will despatch up to three listings free of charge.

  • Priority Services: call 01793 414600 for access to information on buildings, archaeology, air photographs or maritime sites. Within three days, the NMR will supply information on what photographs, drawings, documents or database information is held for a site under any one of these headings. The charge for this service is £25 + VAT. The NMR can also supply the same information free of charge within 15 working days. This service replaces the old air photographic priority service, which cost £44 + VAT.

  • Internet: visitors to http:\\www.rchme.gov.uk will find virtual order forms for all the above services, plus a range of information and pictures from the NMR and its parent body, the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England.
