The control of legionellosis - recommended code of conduct for service providers

Keywords Water management, Health and Safety

The two major organisations in the water management industry - The British Association for Chemical Specialities (BACS) and the Water Management Society (WMS) - in full consultation with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have formulated and launched a Recommended Code of Conduct for Service Providers. A service provider is any organisation, individual or sub-contractor who provides services associated with the control of legionellosis in industrial or commercial premises.

This is a major initiative covering a wide spectrum of services and disciplines designed to assist the industry in its constant aim to improve standards and enhance public perception with respect to the minimisation of legionellosis.

All companies registering under the Code of Conduct indicate their willingness to abide by the six conditions of compliance and work towards the six commitments detailed in the registration document. These cover: allocation of responsibilities; training and competence of personnel; control measures; communication and management; record keeping and reviews.

A total of 7,500 of these Codes of Conduct have now been circulated to service provider companies and their clients.

Registered companies are already reporting that their clients are enquiring if they are registered under the Code. During November a list of all companies registered so far will be available from the Code of Conduct Secretariat; in the meantime any company wishing to enquire if one of their prospective suppliers has registered may enquire, by telephone, on +44 (0)1827 269 063.

Reference to the Code has already been included in the Consultation Document published by the HSE on the revision of Health and Safety Guidance - HS(G)70.

The Code of Conduct is seen as a living document that will be revised as necessary according to consultation with the industry. Registration is to be renewed annually, and mechanisms are in place to monitor registered companies and their compliance according to the Code.
