A growing number of organisations are realising the impact of the workplace environment upon the productivity and wellbeing of employees. This is a "hidden" aspect of the workplace which is frequently neglected or ignored. The regard, or lack of it, for wider issues relating to personal comfort, safety, health and the provision and quality of welfare facilities within any workplace contributes to the ever present "bottom line" through sickness, absence, accidents, staff turnover, low morale, maintenance issues and management costs.

To focus on this challenge and direct resources in the most effective manner, it is first necessary to identify the source or determine the cause. To assist organisations to benchmark their current practices and standards, thus enabling them to identify and prioritise areas for improvement or change, Winton Environmental Management has developed their Workplace Environment Survey.

This survey is a broad and strategic overview of the workplace, covering air quality, water hygiene, hazardous materials and factors which impact on occupied space such as noise and lighting. The survey also incorporates elements associated with general housekeeping which impact on the workplace environment.

Not all buildings are air-conditioned and the survey is designed for use in premises with or without mechanical ventilation or air-conditioning. It is equally effective in a wide range of business functions and will provide the building or facilities manager with a benchmark report on the "health" of a building.

This is also an opportunity to highlight best practice and give recognition to the activities which support the workplace environment, much of it unseen and unknown.

The Workplace Environment Survey will help organisations gain control of the cause rather than simply treat the symptoms.
