The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is pleased to announce the winners of the annual CIOB Innovation Competitions. These competitions aim to encourage and reward innovation within construction and so contribute to raising standards and creating a climate in which progress and success are achieved and valued.

Undergraduate dissertation competition

Daniel Whittingham, a 1999 graduate of the BSc (Hons) Project Management for Construction course at the University of Brighton, has been announced as the winner of the 1999 CIOB Undergraduate Dissertation competition. Daniel is now employed as an Assistant Project Manager for MPM Capita Ltd, one of the largest development management consultancies in the UK, and is currently working on the new build world headquarters for Flemings, a leading merchant bank in the City.

The overall standard of entries in the competition was very high as only those dissertations, from CIOB accredited degree courses, which had been awarded a mark of 70 per cent or over were eligible for consideration. The competition aims to acknowledge the contribution made to innovation by undergraduate students and to encourage and reward innovative thinking.

Daniel's winning dissertation was entitled "A study to determine the effectiveness of partnering in UK construction" and the judges noted that this dissertation facilitated the development of an innovative theoretical model based on the collection of literature, interviews and analysis.

The runners-up were Hoon Yeow Cheok of the University of Wolverhampton and James Taylor of the University of Salford with dissertations which considered "The impact of the Egan Report on problems faced by UK contracting" and "The realisation of business benefit through the implementation of integrated information systems" respectively.

Research papers competition

The Premier Award in the annual CIOB Research Papers competition has been won by Bernd Siehler, Richard Neale and Falah Mustapha for a paper entitled "A proposed model for the top European contractors to be best positioned for the challenges of globalisation". This paper addresses global strategies with particular reference to international contractors and provides a model for understanding their policies and behaviours.

The Runner-Up Award goes to Keith Taylor and Alan Watson for their paper on "Benchmarking systems in construction: a prototype tool for selection" which provides a prototype tool for the comparison and selection of benchmarking tools according to project attributes.

The winners from both competitions will be invited to a presentation event later in the year to receive their cash prizes and commemorative medals. CIOB is also planning to publish the two winning entries from the Research Papers competition.

The 2000 CIOB Innovation Competitions will be launched in the autumn. They will be open to final-year dissertations submitted to CIOB accredited courses in 2000, and to research papers with a maximum of three authors, one of whom must be a CIOB Member. The judges will be looking for evidence of innovative thinking and practice within construction.
