Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) supports Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) as it "broadens its reach"

Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) supports Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) as it "broadens its reach"Keywords: Construction industry, Vocational training, Qualifications, CIOB

CIOB deputy chief executive Michael Brown has declared full support for the new CSCS management and supervisory cards, despite ten years ago having been even hostile to this type of qualification! He explained that his "conversion" came about as a direct result of meeting many candidates over the years who had so obviously benefited from an occupation standards and vocational qualification style of learning.

The CIOB is now an awarding body for these qualifications, actively supporting CSCS work to make vocational qualifications as well as Construction Management degrees the benchmarks for the cards.

As the industry commits itself further towards a more qualified workforce, the CIOB will continue to support such measures and work closely with the construction industry to deliver these qualifications to members. The CIOB also particularly strongly supports the Health and Safety element.

The construction industry can now confidently predict the time when not only is the necessary training and testing available, it is also undertaken by the workforce as a whole. "We are entering a remedial stage in bringing construction industry workers up to scratch in their declaration of competence and Health & Safety training," says Michael Brown, "but it will become the norm. CSCS is one of the most important drivers in making this possible and providing the bedrock on which many other changes in the industry can be made."
