Breathing new life into redundant buildings

Breathing new life into redundant buildingsKeywords: Buildings, Cabling, Refurbishment, Flooring

Many buildings were never designed for modern office technology, with the well-known cabling spaghetti spreading from one place to another. Nor were they designed for rapid changing of workspace and desking location. Even designers of new buildings are looking for more cost effective ways to get cables into buildings.

Building owners can now bring their building stock back to life for the modern day office with the launch of a revolutionary new cable management system from Interface called Intercell (Plate 1).

With so many old buildings around the country requiring refurbishment to bring them up-to-date for modern technology, in Intercell, Prospect and Peachgate Group (PPG) of Kingswood, Bristol, UK, have found a unique product that allows today's dynamic office, characterised by constantly reconfigured workstations, corporate restructuring and increasing office automation demand, workspace flexibility and ease of change to be floored.

Plate 1 Intercell cable management system

Supplied and installed by PPG, Intercell is easily installed in existing structures, accommodating a high volume of cables under floor with only a minimal encroachment on ceiling height. The modular system of panels allows additions and changes to be made easily.

Intercell is 33 per cent lighter than traditional flooring systems, has 16 pedestals per panel, or 64 per m2 creating a solid feel underfoot and has therefore outstanding load carrying capacity.

Its unique space-frame basis offers a high cabling capacity with natural cableways, with standard heights from just 60mm and 90mm, the encroachment on existing ceiling heights is therefore kept to a minimum.

To date, over two million square metres of Intercell have been installed across the globe. This reflects the rapid success of the product, and its growing appeal as a unique solution to meet increasing cable management demands. PPG and Interface are committed to providing the workspace of the future, offering the perfect solution for the workplace revolution – creating modern workspace from traditional buildings and building stock.

Jim Heal Jnr, PPG's business development manager said: "This revolutionary new access flooring system will breath new life into redundant buildings, making them fit for the modern day office. The Intercell flooring systems allows efficient traffic flows for various cabling installations including data, telecommunications and electricity. This product will revolutionise the office refurbishment market and give PPG an advantage over our competitors with carpet installations nation-wide."
