Innovation in learning: Agilent Technologies thinks outside the box

Roche T., Wick C., Stewart M. Journal of Organizational Excellence (USA), Autumn 2005 Vol 24 No 4, Start page: 45 (9 pages)

Purpose – to show how Agilent Technologies has used learning and development programmes to contribute to organizational excellence. Design/methodology/approach – argues that learning needs to be integral to work, rather than a separate classroom activity. Adopts an approach to innovation that relies on “redrawing the box” to include learning transfer. Describes the redesign of a core programme known as “ManagingAgilent”, a global three-day programme regarded as central to the company’s development strategy, which is the starting point for new leaders. States that six additional elements were incorporated: visible senior sponsorship; greater emphasis on application and results; an expanded role for facilitators; an extended learning period for participants; active engagement of participants’ managers; and encouragement of formal and informal peer support. Practical implications – includes quotations and post-course self-evaluation summaries from participating managers describing their progress on developmental goals, improvement in managerial effectiveness and the expected business impact of these changes. Originality/value – emphasizes the value of a systemic approach to learning in the workplace.Style: Case study
