Purpose – Discusses how UK companies can recruit staff with the language skills needed in international business. Design/methodology/approach – Looks at how Wolseley, a heating and plumbing products distributor, has improved language competences within the firm by recruiting graduates who are fluent in English and another modern European language. Describes the European Graduate Program that it has set up and explains how it operates. In particular, looks at the methods used to test the graduates’ language capabilities during the recruitment process. Findings – Underlines that is it crucial assess the fluency of the graduates to determine if their skills are sufficient when recruiting people for their language skills. Highlights the effectiveness of the telephone test developed and carried out for Wolseley by Communicaid.
