Purpose – To discuss the challenges associated with recruiting, engaging and retaining people who are highly effective at both leadership and technical skills. Design/methodology/approach – States that success in this area is a major determinant of competitive advantage and business results. Suggests that successful talent management involves creating healthy, innovative cultures and strong, supportive leaders. Reports the views and experiences of eight experts who are familiar with effective practices in this area, noting that all emphasize the importance of supportive leadership and caring performance cultures. Adds that all use consistent, scientifically proven approaches to measure success and look for a consistent fit between their chosen tactics and the culture that they are working to achieve.
