Discusses the human resource management (HRM) issues facing the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) in delivering a high quality service in the wake of the 20 billion pounds sterling efficiency savings drive. Argues that HRM is key to the success of the efficiency plan, and will play a crucial role in managing the largest reform of the NHS since its inception in 1947. Examines what quality looks like to a department in the NHS, and notes that measuring performance across the many disciplines involved, from nurses and doctors to caterers and cleaners, presents a number of challenges. Records that leadership must improve if success is to be achieved, and there is an important role to be played by quality standards. Includes the account in a special issue partly devoted to the theme: “How healthy is quality in the NHS? A prognosis for health care in the UK”.ISSN: 1352-8769Reference: 41AL858
