New health and safety training for managers and employees

Keywords Accidents, Health and Safety, Responsibility

Accidents and ill-health cost business and industry billions of pounds each year, yet few managers and employers are aware of how they can contribute to improving workplace health and safety.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health's (IOSHs) new Managing Safely and Working Safely courses are designed to address the needs of the non-expert, thereby increasing the awareness of health and safety issues, and helping to foster a culture of safe working.

First launched in 1993, the courses have been delivered to more than 60,000 personnel every year, many from blue-chip companies such as Bayer, British Steel, the BBC, Nestlé, Lucas Industries and Unigate, as well as local authorities, hospital trusts, colleges and universities.

Now both courses have been fully revised to adopt the latest thinking in health and safety training. As IOSH chief executive, John Barrell, explains:

"IOSH believes that safety and health is the responsibility of everyone at work not just the experts. These new courses will help managers and employees identify potential sources of harm before they lead to accidents, injury or ill-health."

The courses are designed to complement each other, with Managing Safely aimed at those who have to manage both safely and effectively, and Working Safely encouraging individual workers to understand their responsibilities in contributing to good workplace health and safety. A third course, Safety for Senior Executives also being revised addresses the needs of top executives who have to determine an organization's health and safety strategy.
