European Commission steps up training of its staff

The European Commission is stepping up significantly the amount of training it offers to its own employees.

Each staff member received, on average, 2 days of training in 2000, but the Commission expects this to reach 10 days a year by 2005. The training budget will almost double, to 22.5 million, over this period.

A training-needs analysis is now an obligatory part of each employee's annual career- development report, so that employees can agree the training they need in the following 12 months with their immediate superior.

Each new Commission employee receives induction training, plus training in languages, computer skills, ethics and integrity. Service culture and getting results are among the six essential competencies identified for all Commission employees. Detailed management training is provided to all middle and senior managers.

The Commission organizes more than 100 general training courses, almost 200 computer courses and training in 26 languages. They include all the main EU languages, the languages of acceding and candidate countries, plus Arabic, Japanese and Russian.
