Insurance group develops managers of the future

Article Type: Notes and news From: Industrial and Commercial Training, Volume 42, Issue 3

UK commercial-property insurance broker Barbon Insurance Group has launched a 15-month internal management-development program aimed partly at implementing fresh ideas in the business.

Richard Walden, HR director, commented: “This is a demanding program with monthly training workshops and challenging written assignments. We have been extremely impressed with the standard of the work completed by the candidates and by their continued enthusiasm for the program over its first eight months.”

The program includes courses on communication skills, resourcing, recruitment and selection, finance, performance management, teamwork and customer service.

The aspiring managers are currently working through the training workshops and related assignments in order to gain a Level 3 diploma in first-line management and Level 5 certificate in management and leadership, both of which are accredited by the Chartered Management Institute. They have already completed and passed assignments in resource planning, performance management and developing individuals and teams.

Kara Beevers, of Barbon’s business-change team, said: “I have enjoyed every session so far. They go into great detail and really help you to understand how and why the business makes certain decisions.”

“All sessions really give a great sense of self-awareness about how you come across as an individual and how everyone has different styles. The program has also given me the opportunity to build relationships with other members of the business and to learn more about their roles.”
