Climate Group report – plugged-in fleets: a guide to deploying electric vehicles in fleets

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Volume 4, Issue 3

The Climate Group, in collaboration with Energy Saving Trust and Cenex, has published a report demonstrating the economic and environmental benefits of employing electric vehicles (EVs) in fleets and provides practical guidance for fleet managers looking to introduce them. More than half of all new cars in the UK are bought by fleets and with 22 per cent of UK domestic carbon emissions coming from transport (of which 90 per cent is on the road). The authors believe that there needs to be a big take-up of ultra-low emission vehicles in UK fleets in order to meet the Government’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent from 1990 levels between 2023 and 2027. The report also highlights that EVs can make good commercial sense if they are deployed in the right place and businesses benefit from a range of incentives from the plug-in car and van grants to enhanced capital allowances. In addition, drivers of electric cars pay no company car tax until 2015.
