Fibre science to apparel engineering

The 27th Textile Research Symposium was held on 3-5 August 1998 at Mt Fuji in Japan, in the Fuji Kenshusho (Fuji Educational Conference Centre). This year, 50 excellent papers were presented, covering a wide range of textile technology from fiber science to apparel engineering in single sessions. This provides the opportunity for discussion of textile science and engineering from all sectors of textiles and apparel research. This single session idea is based on the fact that we must not subdivide textile and apparel technologies.

Discussions were very lively and continued outside the lecture rooms whilst enjoying drinks and refreshments in the evening.

Keynote lectures were also given in the evening of the second day:

  • Dr J. Militky´, ‘‘Abuse of correlation’’;

  • Dr L. Hes, ‘‘Recycling textiles’’;

  • Dr Yi Li, ‘‘Traditional Chinese wisdom in selecting fabrics for summer wear’’;

  • Dr Jintu Fan, ‘‘A failed idea, or is it?’’;

  • Dr S. Mukhopadhyay, ‘‘Neuro-science versus fibre science’’;

  • Dr S. Kawabata, ‘‘A short report from the Kyoto seminar on the background of creativity’’;

  • ‘‘My country’’ and ‘‘My university’’, by various participants from around the world.

Special thanks should be recorded for the co-operation of the following organisations:

  • The Textile Machinery Society of Japan;

  • The Society of Fiber Science and Technology;

  • The Textile Institute, Japan Section;

  • The Japan Society of Home Economics;

  • The Japan Society of Composite Materials; and

  • The Japan Research Association for Textile End-uses.

The International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology is publishing a selection of papers from the apparel session of the Mt Fuji Conference in this special issue.
