Introduction

An International Conference is being organised by the School of Textiles and Design of Heriot-Watt University to cover all aspects of design, textiles and clothing. The organisers focus the conference at the interface between design and technology and expect sessions to cover strategic areas of academic and industrial importance.

Conference rational

Textile design and technology have been evolving in parallel, with little interaction. The lack of synergy between design and engineering hinders a huge potential for developing new products and processes and for advancing the competitiveness of the industry.

The International Textile Design and Engineering Conference, INTEDEC 2003, proposes to bridge the gaps between aesthetics and technology and to create a positive synergy between researchers in these two fields. The conference would be of interest to academics and industrialists from a number of backgrounds, including designers, engineers, scientists, fashionists, colour chemists, etc.

“Fibrous assemblies at the design and engineering interface” aims at exploring and exploiting new scientific and technological developments at the design/engineering interface of the broad textile industry.

“We must recognise the opportunities that the knowledge of aesthetics can bring to engineers and the knowledge of engineering can bring to designers.”

Some topics of interest covered by the conference are listed below, but they are not exclusive to the conference theme.

  The role of traditional and high-tech materials in contemporary textile and fashion design.

  Engineering the aesthetics of materials and assembled textile products.

• •

  Design, development and properties of novel fibres and fabrics, including nanotextiles, 3D fabrics and smart materials.

  Digital design for textiles and fashion, retailing automation and 3D simulation for E-commerce.

• •

  Manufacturing processes and machine automation.

• •

  Manipulation of textiles for robotics and automation.

• •

  Structural mechanics, measurement, instrumentation and analysis of attributes of materials and products.

• •

  Technical textiles for medical, automotive, aerospace and civil engineering materials and devices.

The organisers invite papers and exhibits from the broad area of textiles, and particularly encourage works highlighting the design/technology interface. All submissions will be refereed prior to acceptance for presentation and publication in the conference proceedings.

Conference venue

The conference will be held principally in the Heriot-Watt University Riccarton Campus at Edinburgh, where accommodation has also been arranged. The Riccarton Campus is situated 7 miles west of the centre of Edinburgh and is easily accessible from the motorway network (close to the M8/city bypass) and by air (10 min from Edinburgh Airport).

The second day of the conference, which will include oral and poster presentations and exhibitions will be held in the School of Textiles and Design, on the Scottish Borders Campus in the historic textile town of Galashiels, approximately 35 miles south of Edinburgh. A free transport service to and from Galashiels will be made available to delegates.

Paper submissions

Authors are invited to submit titles and abstracts (maximum of 300 words) and design portfolios by 28 February 2003, preferably by e-mail to INTEDEC@hw.ac.uk. Alternatively, submissions can be sent for the attention of Sharon Lam at the organiser’s address below.

Authors will be notified of acceptance of their paper(s) or exhibits by 30 April 2003. Full papers for publication in the proceedings will be required by 30 June 2003.
