Magic World of Textiles

Magic World of Textiles

Celebrating 40 years of university instruction and organised scientific research in the field of textiles and textile technologies, Faculty of Textile Technology, University of Zagreb, organised an international scientific conference, entitled International Textile, Clothing and Design ConferenceMagic World of Textiles. The conference took place at the International Centre of Croatian Universities in Dubrovnik, from 6 to 9 October 2002 (Plate 1).

The conference was organised under the auspices of global, European and Croatian scientific and professional associations: DAAAM International Vienna, Austria; AUTEX Ghent, Belgium; The Textile Institute, Manchester, UK; International Textile Academie, New Delhi, India; University of Zagreb, Croatia and the Academy of Technical Sciences of Croatia.

The topic of this year's conference, which is planned to be organised bi-annually in Dubrovnik, was defined as Development trends and state of the arts in research in the field of textile and garment technologies, as well as fashion design and marketing of textiles and garment products.

The idea was to organise an international forum to exchange experiences and establish new contacts, with the aim of getting a fuller overview of the conditions, level and possibilities of improving research, technological and general professional knowledge in textiles, garment engineering, fashion design and related technologies, as well as marketing.

After reviewing by an international reviewing board, 128 papers were accepted to be presented and published in the ITC&DC 2002 Book of Proceedings. The papers were sorted into seven sections of relatively separated and specific areas of research.

Section A: Textile fibres and contemporary materials (27 papers).

Section B: Manufacturing and testing yarns, woven and nonwoven fabrics (13 papers).

Section C: Processes and technologies of textile finishing and care (19 papers).

Section D: Garment technology engineering (18 papers).

Section E: Textiles – analysis, testing and quality control (25 papers).

Section F: Fashion design and marketing textile and garment products (14 papers).

Section G: Environment protection and energy management (12 papers)..

There were 154 registered participants at the conference, coming from 27 European and overseas countries.

The Faculty of Textile Technology, University of Zagreb, plans to organise this type of international forums regularly in Dubrovnik, as the 2002 event has shown that there is much to be gained by bringing together so many top level researchers and allow them exchange their experiences and present results in an organised way and in the environment of the beautiful Dubrovnik.

Obviously, in a global village our planet is, there is no other road to survival but co-operation and global implementation of knowledge. There is simply no time or place for petty competitions and waiting for a more favourable moment, especially so in the field of knowledge and research. Not only that it should be global, it must be globally available, or otherwise... Anyhow, we have estimated the benefits of co-operation valuable enough and planned to contribute, as much as we can to global understanding and exchanging of ideas and knowledge.

On behalf of the organising and organisational committees of the ITC&DC 2002, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology editorial boards for the opportunity to publish this selection of papers from the conference in the Journal, and in this way further promote the results of the conference and benefit of the textile and garment international community.
