New strategy to help patients to get the best from their medicines

Up to half of all people with chronic disease end up using their medicines incorrectly, with potentially serious consequences. A new £1.3 million UK national strategy aimed at involving patients in decisions about their medicines and thereby reducing avoidable illness and cutting waste was announced in April. This new initiative will find ways to improve advice and support for patients on understanding their medicines and how to take them.

A total of £1.3 million is being made available over the next two years to support the work of a national joint task force which will bring together representatives of patients, the NHS, social care, health professions and the pharmaceutical industry. The funds will support a project team, based at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, which will work under the direction of the task force.
