The NHS University

In October, the British Prime Minister launched the NHS University, which will be the largest university in the world for training and educating staff. It will be both a physical and virtual institution using electronic and distance learning and offering courses and training for every member of the NHS team whether they are nurses, doctors, therapists or cleaners.

The University aims to help every member of the 1 million NHS staff to reach their full potential, whether that is gaining NVQ qualifications for the first time to begin a career in nursing or training to undertake procedures previously done only by doctors. Everyone in the NHS will begin their career with the NHS University, through induction courses and direct training. The University will deliver training in areas common to all health professionals from consultants to support workers, such as communication skills, ethics and assessment skills. Joint training between different health professionals, sharing their skills and experience and learning from each other will be a fundamental part of the NHS University curriculum.

Secretary of State Mr Alan Milburn said:

The NHS University will play a key role in reforming the NHS. The NHS treats millions of patients thanks to its million talented, hardworking staff. With the NHS University we will be able to ensure every member of staff gets the opportunity to make the most of their skills – helping them to smash through the glass ceiling which holds too many back. Access to top quality education and training – the first time for some, a second opportunity for many, continuing professional development for all – will ensure each individual and every clinical team can update and maintain the skills they need in a modern, changing health service. By investing in the NHS workforce, we will get the best care for patients.
