A special course for people working in Yemeni public radio and television has been held at the Republican Hospital in Taiz.

The course lasted for five days and aimed to enlighten 20 participants working in the public media about population messages and public health in general.

The course was organized by the General Program for Public Information, run by the Ministry of Information, in cooperation with the Public and Health Support Program of the General Secretariat of the National Population Council.

In the opening ceremony Abdulwahab al-Junaid, deputy assistance of Taiz governorate, in the governorate, stressed the necessity of improving the awareness of public and reproductive health.

He said that the media have a particular role to play, especially TV and radio, which are found in all Yemeni homes. He said that radio and television have a wide penetration, and are capable of attracting the public’s attention easily, especially when they talk about issues of topical concern.

“Dealing with issues simply and in a well planned manner makes it easier for solutions to gain acceptance. And that is a quality mission of the media, TV and radio”, he said.

Younis Haza, Deputy Minister of Information and the General Executive Manger of program, said that the course was one of the most important qualified courses and concluded the 2007 training program. This course inaugurated the fourth conference on media campaigns about public policy, which is due to be held in the first half of December

“We all realize the increasing importance of media campaigns for the future”, he said. “Journalism, the media system and public foundations should enhance their activities to fit the requirements of the fourth public conference. We have to use the human resources and capabilities of our country to bring issues to the attention of the public”, he added.
