Pakistan - 35m children administered anti-polio drops

Health teams have administered anti-polio drops to around 35 million children of under five-year during three-day national polio eradication campaign which has concluded in Pakistan.

According to an official of Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), 90,000 vaccination teams with workforce of two million people were given the task of administering anti-polio drops to children.

He said the campaign activities were monitored by area supervisors while zonal supervisors also participated in the drive.

The UN agencies, partners, donor governments and private sector foundations have extended support during anti-polio drive. He said community leaders, media persons, religious scholars, health workers and teachers have also played important role to educate parents.

And, Minister for Health Makhdoom Shahab-ud-Din visited polio control cell set up at a local hotel, where he received telephonic calls from various parts of the country who stated that polio teams have not reached their homes for polio vaccination.

The minister directed the local authorities concerned to send polio teams in those areas immediately for vaccination.

So far four polio cases have been reported during current year while 86 polio cases were reported during last year against 117 in 2007.

A total of 28 cases were from NWFP while 19 from FATA. He said 20 affected children were from Swat while in FATA 15 cases were from Bajour, ten from Balochistan, 12 from Sindh and 17 cases from Punjab.

According to health experts, polio is a highly infectious viral disease, which mainly affects young children.
