The content on this page will most likely grow over time as we become more aware of useful project management (PM) association links and forthcoming conferences. This is at least a start!

Useful general links

For readers who either supervise research students, or are researchers the Australian Digital Thesis Library: http://adt.caul.edu.au/ is a highly useful resource. The home page of the ADTL web site states the following which should explain its value.

“The aim of the ADT program is to establish a distributed database of digital versions of theses produced by the postgraduate research students at Australian universities. The theses will be available worldwide via the web. The ideal behind the program is to provide access to, and promote Australian research to the international community” (accessed January 30, 2008). This library contains hundreds of doctoral theses and so is of immense value in providing examples of theses and for record through the theses of current research work of PhDs, DBAs and DPMs, etc. from across a wide range of disciplines, many highly relevant to the PM discipline.

Conferences in 2009

Happy projects! is an international conference annually held in Vienna for practitioners, researchers and students. The Happy projects’08 was held on the topic projects and sales. Happy projects’09 Projects & Change (again) will be organized in June 2009 (www.happyprojects.at/index.php?id=593&L=2).

As part of the happy projects conference there is an international student paper award held. The call for the student paper award 2009 will be out soon on the conference web site.

European Academy of Management (EURAM) – May 11-14, 2009 in Liverpool and UK: www.euram2009.org/r/default.asp?iId=EEIKKG it has a strong PM track and is highly regarded in general management and PM circles.

The International Project Management Association (IPMA) is holding its 23rd IPMA World Congress, in Helsinki, Finland from June 15 to 17, 2009. Go to URL: www.refresh09.com/&from=banner for details. There is a scientific papers section with a special issue of selected papers from that conference to appear in Volume 3 in 2010.

CIB Joint International Symposium, Dubrovnik, Croatia, September 27-October 1, 2009, internationally supported by IPMA. Faculty of Civil Engineering, The University of Zagreb is organizing Joint International Symposium of CIB Working Commissions: W055: Building Economics and W065 Organization and Management in Construction. This is the prominent annual meeting hosting the best researchers, consultants, managers and experts from the fields of organization, management, and economy in construction. The theme of the symposium is “Construction facing worlwide challenges”. The goal is to present and exchange experience in the international construction sector. The conference will be held in Dubrovnik, a medieval city on the Croatian side of the Adriatic coastline. The city is a treasure trove of cultural and historical monuments built throughout its 1,000-year existence. The symposium will be held from September 27 to 30, 2009.

The International Research Network on Organizing by Projects (IRNOP) holds its research conferences on odd years and the next one will be held in Berlin Germany in early October 2009. This organisation would be of great interest to PM researchers and their web site is www.irnop.org/. That site also links well to other research organisations and forthcoming conferences of interest to PM academics and practitioners. Their web site lists the links to these conferences with dates for abstracts, submissions, etc.

Conferences in 2010

The Project Management Institute (PMI) research conference is held every two years (even years) in 2004 it was held in London, in 2006 in Montreal and in July 2008 in Warsaw Poland. It is to be held in Washington, DC in 2010 so keep posted. Readers may be interested in PMI regional congresses and events they can access this through the PMI web site (see: www.pmi.org/Pages/Calendar.aspx) the PMI regional conferences are global so that for example in 2007 there was one in San Paulo, Brazil, Cancun Mexico, Wellington New Zealand. The calendar web link, however, provides details only month by month so it can be somewhat time consuming to find out what is on where, at what time.

For those readers interested in PM in construction they may find a number of related upcoming conferences of interest.

Useful PM links

The IPMA is the world’s oldest PM organisation. It is an international network of national PM societies and their web link is: www.ipma.ch/Pages/default.aspx. The advantage of keeping abreast with this web site is that it links to a range of PM associations and (their URL link is: www.ipma.ch/membership/Pages/default.aspx) so link through them to find out more about their conferences and events.

The UK Association for Project Management is mounting several national events during 2009. Full details are at available at: www.apm.org.uk/awards.asp and www.apm.org.uk/conference.asp, respectively.

One other example of the associated group is the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) that has an annual conference and also jointly offers one with the PMI Australian chapters. The AIPM web link is: www.aipm.com.au/html/default.cfm

The IRNOP web site is very useful for conferences, books and PM journal matters their web site URL is: www.irnop.org/their next conference is in Berlin in 2009 so this site is useful to keep track of dates.

The CIB is an organisation that is centred in Europe and based in The Netherlands but with global reach and supports and is composed of construction practitioners and academics. They have many conferences and meeting of their specialised working commissions, many of interest to PM readers of this journal the home page URL is: www.cibworld.nl/web site/

Another useful link for PM students and academics to consider is two groups of collaborating organisations that link universities teaching PM and also students and practitioners:

  The PMI have formed the Global Accreditation Centre (GAC) that has the aim of accrediting PM courses/programs of study (mainly at the masters degree level as well as doctoral level) the URL link to the GAC is: www.pmi.org/CareerDevelopment/Pages/GAC-Academic-Network.aspx

  The other group is PMUni URL: www.pmuni.net/. PMUni is an international network of universities, education and research institutions as well as process and project-oriented companies with the overall objective to promote professional education and research in process and PM. They and have held a number of workshops, conferences and meetings where the participants meet to exchange experience in research and education (www.pmuni.net/).

Call for applications for the IPMA Research Awards

IPMA recognizes outstanding research contributions of individual researchers and research teams. The category Young Researcher Award especially encourages Phd students and master students to apply (www.ipma.ch/awards/resawards/Pages/default.aspx).
