Useful general links

For readers who either supervise research students, or are researchers, the Australian Digital Thesis Library (http://adt.caul.edu.au/) is a highly useful resource. The home page of the ADTL web site states the following which should explain its value.

“The aim of the ADT program is to establish a distributed database of digital versions of theses produced by the postgraduate research students at Australian universities. The theses will be available worldwide via the web. The ideal behind the program is to provide access to, and promote Australian research to the international community” (accessed 30 January 2008). This library contains hundreds of doctoral theses and so is of immense value in providing examples of theses and for record through the theses of current research work of PhDs, DBAs and DPMs, etc. from across a wide range of disciplines, many highly relevant to the PM discipline.

Another useful organisation for those engaged in doctorates is The European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM). This organisation has created a web site that is intend to promote as the web site of a European job market for business academic positions, see www.eiasm.org/r/about-eiasm. One section of their web site is devoted to the candidates. They will have to enter their names and profiles (including CVs, areas of expertise and papers). Another section is for the institutions. They will have to indicate the assistant professorship positions (one or more) that they plan to open (field, starting date, possibly information about the contract, e.g. salary). Demands and applications can be in any area of the business academic community. EIASM holds a range of events including doctoral symposia and meetings.

Conferences at the end 2009

CIB Joint International Symposium, Dubrovnik, Croatia, 27 September-1 October 2009, internationally supported by International Project Management Association (IPMA). The University of Zagreb, Faculty of Civil Engineering is organizing Joint International Symposium of CIB Working Commissions: W055: Building Economics and W065 Organization and Management in Construction. This is the prominent annual meeting hosting the best researchers, consultants, managers and experts from the fields of organization, management, and economy in construction. The theme of the symposium is “construction facing worlwide challenges”. The symposium will be held from 27-30 September 2009. More details can be found on the conference web site: http://cib2009.grad.hr. For further information, you may contact the CIB 2009 Dubrovnik Secretariat at: cib2009dubrovnik@grad.hr for the programme or paper submission issues or web site: cib2009dubrovnik@event.hr for accommodation and registration.

The International Research Network on Organizing by Projects (IRNOP) holds its research conferences on odd years and the next one will be held in Berlin, Germany, in early October 2009. This organisation would be of great interest to PM researchers and their web site is: www.irnop.org/. That site also links well to other research organisations and forthcoming conferences of interest to PM academics and practitioners. Their web site lists the links to these conferences with dates for abstracts, submissions, etc.

Conferences for 2010

The “Making Projects Critical” 5th international workshop on critical studies of project-based work, project management and the projectification of society and life at large will be held on 21-22 January 2010, Bristol, UK. A key concern of this workshop is to employ critical perspectives to analyse and evaluate the practice of project management and decision making as evidenced in the approval, governance and control of project work and project workers. While the abstracts deadline would be missed by the time this journal is available, readers could contact Dr Svetlana Cicmil at: Svetlana.Cicmil@uwe.ac.uk or check the BBS web site: www.uwe.ac.uk/bbs/research/mpc/index.shtml about future workshops.

The inaugural Asia Pacific Research Conference on Project Management will be held at Monash University, Melbourne Australia on 25-26 February 2010 with a Doctoral Consortium being held on 24 February. Useful PM links

The IPMA is the world's oldest project management organisation. It is an international network of national project management societies and their web link is www.ipma.ch/Pages/default.aspx. The advantage of keeping abreast with this web site is that it links to a range of PM associations and (their link is www.ipma.ch/membership/Pages/default.aspx) so link through them to find out more about their conferences and events.

The UK Association for Project Management is mounting several national events during 2009. Full details are at available at: www.apm.org.uk/awards.asp and www.apm.org.uk/conference.asp, respectively.

One other example of the associated group is the Australian Institute of Project Management (AIPM) that has an annual conference and also jointly offers one with the PMI Australian chapters. The AIPM web link is www.aipm.com.au/html/default.cfm

The IRNOP web site is very useful for conferences, books and PM journal matters their web site is: www.irnop.org/ their next conference is in Berlin in 2009 so this site is useful to keep track of dates.

The CIB is an organisation that is centred in Europe and based in The Netherlands but with global reach and supports and is composed of construction practitioners and academics. They have many conferences and meeting of their specialised working commissions, many of interest to PM readers of this journal the home page web site is: www.cibworld.nl/web site/

Another useful link for PM students and academics to consider is two groups of collaborating organisations that link universities teaching PM and also students and practitioners:

  1. 1.

The PMI have formed the Global Accreditation Centre (GAC) that has the aim of accrediting PM courses/programs of study (mainly at the masters degree level as well as doctoral level) the web site link to the GAC is: www.pmi.org/CareerDevelopment/Pages/GAC-Academic-Network.aspx

  2. 2.

The other group is PMUni web site: www.pmuni.net/. PMUni is an international network of universities, education and research institutions as well as process and project-oriented companies with the overall objective to promote professional education and research in process and project management. They and have held a number of workshops, conferences and meetings where the participants meet to exchange experience in research and education (www.pmuni.net/).

Call for applications for the IPMA Research Awards

IPMA recognizes outstanding research contributions of individual researchers and research teams. The category Young Researcher Award especially encourages Phd students and master students to apply (www.ipma.ch/awards/resawards/Pages/default.aspx, see short not following on this important opportunity).

The IPMA Research Awards to honour excellence in Project Management Research

In 2009, the IPMA Research Awards were presented at the IPMA World Congress in Helsinki. IPMA has established these awards to encourage excellent project management research. Within the IPMA Research Awards, we distinguish several categories of prizes. The IPMA Young Researcher Award honours young researcher. The IPMA Research Award honours established project management researchers. It is awarded to an individual researcher or a research team. In addition to the award winners, the jury also honours further outstanding research contributions in these two categories with the prize IPMA Outstanding Research Contributions.

In 2009 for the first time, the IPMA Research Achievement Award was presented to honour an exceptional project management researcher for his oeuvre. In Helsinki, this prize was presented to Professor Peter W.G. Morris, who has dedicated his life to establishing the domain and the discipline of management of projects.

Here, in this paper, I will further concentrate on the Young Research Award and The IPMA Research Award and introduce the IPMA research Award Jury 2009 and the awardees of the IPMA Research Awards 2009. At the end of the paper, I will call for applications of the IPMA Research Awards 2010, which will be presented at the World Congress in Istanbul, Turkey in November 2010.

Awardees of the Young Research Award 2009

Dr Karin Bredin was awarded the IPMA Young Researcher Award 2009

She received the award for her research on “Human Resource Management in Project-Based Organisations”. The objective of the research project was to explore the challenges and changes for human resource management (HRM) in project-based organisations and, based on that, to suggest how HRM in project-based organisations can be conceptualised and analysed. This research gives insights into an important aspect of project-based organising and project management that many practitioners are aware of and struggle with in their everyday work. However, very few companies have emphasised the need to adapt people management systems to the project-based setting, and there is still quite little research that can give them tools and inspiration for how this adaptation can be made. This research project indicates important challenges that project-intensive organisations need to be aware of. Moreover, it highlights changes in traditional role structures that is related to the increased use of project-based structures, and it develops a theoretical framework for “People Capability” in project-based organisations, which could inspire companies to identify important HR roles on an operative level and analyse their opportunities to contribute to improved people management systems and improved HRM. The research was part of her PhD undertaken at the Department of Management and Engineering, Linköping University, Sweden. Recently, Karin holds a position as Assistant Professor in Business Administration at Linköping University, Sweden.

Edivandro Carlos Conforto was awarded the IPMA Young Research Honour 2009

He received the honour for his research on “Development of an agile project management method applied to product development in small technology-based companies”. The research was a part of his master sponsored by FAPESP undertaken in project management applied to new product development at São Carlos Engineering School, University of São Paulo. The research project comprised the development of an agile project management (APM) method to be applied in innovative and complex product development projects carried out in technology-based companies. Research achievements demonstrated the applicability of some principles explored on APM theory and also provided practical relevance to the companies under study. From the theory perspective this research advanced the investigation of APM principles and practices by presenting empirical results of their application on product development projects in turbulent and dynamic project environment.

Olga Perminova (MSc) was awarded the IPMA Young Research Honour 2009

She is a researcher at PBI – Research Institute for Project-Based Industry (www.pbi-institute.com). Her areas of expertise include project management, specifically risk and uncertainty management; insurance and foreign economic relations. The awarded research project is “A study of risk, opportunity and uncertainty management practices at the warranty phase of industrial projects” with the aim to investigate how risks, opportunities and uncertainty are understood and managed during the warranty period using the example of 20 projects delivered by one global industrial solution provider. The results of this research indicate that managing uncertainty in all project phases, including warranty, has significant impact on the performance of project-based companies both in financial terms and in terms of customer satisfaction. This study explained the differences between risks, opportunities and uncertainty and justified the practical relevance of such differences. In addition to showing the elements affecting uncertainty, an uncertainty management process has been developed and tested in industrial projects of the supplier. The practical relevance of the research is justified by the fact that the results of this research project (the tool and the process of uncertainty management) are being implemented by the solution provider that participated in the study. The awarded research was a part of Olga's PhD studies at Åbo Akademi University, Laboratory of Industrial Management, Finland.

Awardee of the IPMA Research Award 2009

Professor Anbang Qi and his Team received the IPMA Research Award

Professor Dr Anbang Qi is a full Professor of Business School of Nankai University (PR China). Professor Qi and his team's research focus on project integrated management methodology for project integrated planning and project overall change control. They start to do this research from 2000 for solving some issues in the Earned Value Management Method (EVM). Then they find that project managers need more methods for project integrated management than the EVM as the EVM can only used for two project factors integrated management (even it has some assumption about project scope and quality). And then they have done a lot of research work on this and excogitate the project integrated management methods for three-eight (or all) project factors (quality, scope, time, cost, human resource, communication and procurement and risk) integrated management for different project management integration and different number of project factors configuration and all these forms the project integrated management methodology.

Professor Peter Morris received the IPMA Research Achievement Award

Peter Morris is Professor of Construction and Project Management at University College London. He is also Executive Director of INDECO, a consultancy in the management of projects. His research has largely been on the competencies required to develop and deliver projects and programs successfully. His research underpins the structure of the APM body of knowledge and he was a principal author of the first and fourth editions. He was also a co-author of the original IPMA International Competency Baseline document. He is the leading proponent of The Management of Projects perspective – see The Wiley Guide to Managing Projects (Wiley, 2005); The Management of Projects (Thomas Telford, 1994) and The Anatomy of Major Projects (John Wiley and Sons, 1987). He also works on the linkage between corporate and project strategy (Translating Corporate Strategy into Project Strategy (PMI, 2004) and on project-based learning. He is currently researching how longer term conditions in the built environment are requiring changed management approaches. He has a special interest in the history of project management. In addition to his five books, he is the author of over 110 papers. He is currently co-editing The Oxford Handbook on Project Management (OUP, 2010).
