Perception can be as important as reality

On a similar theme, I have been working for some time on a “measurement model” which measures the perceptions of an organisation (or the organisation’s members) in relation to its own performance. The reason that the work has taken so long is that it has to be quite structured and quite sophisticated to move beyond a simple “I think that …” to uncover real and sometimes complex feelings about a variety of aspects of performance. The project is based on my belief that often the way people think about things is more important than how they actually are! Of course, if I’m wrong, then I’ve just wasted several months’ work.
