Smug? Me?

The UK National Health Service (NHS) is going through a series of quite fundamental restructuring and changes in working practices. It is clear that one aim – quite rightly – is to ensure that most patients are successfully treated at the “lowest” possible (and cheapest possible) level – with nurses taking on more duties that were formerly the responsibility of doctors. I remember in my lectures many years ago comparing the NHS to the health services in developing countries and suggesting that the Western European model in which very expensive doctors treat the common cold, minor depression, aches and pains, etc. was not sustainable. It is good to be proved right after all these years.
