More tea?

Productivity of the tea sector across the major producing nations seems to be declining year-on-year. Except for Brazil, China and Kenya, productivity in all the major tea producing countries has been either on the decline or stagnating.

For instance, Indian tea sector’s yield per hectare has declined 19,164 kg per hectare in 2001 to 18,989 kg per hectare in 2004. This is despite the production going up to 845,000 tonne in 2004 from 835,000 in 2001, an increase of 10,000 tonne.

However, Kenya has improved its productivity substantially to 20,714 kg per hectare in 2004 from 18,218 tonne in 2000. This has resulted in the production increasing to 290,000 tonne in 2004 from 236,236 tonne in 2001. Similarly, China has also improved its productivity to 8,705 kg per hectare in 2004 from 7,836 kg per hectare in 2001.
