A recent World Bank suggests that the income gap between Bulgarians and their European neighbours is likely to continue for some time unless there is a major upward move in labour productivity.
Current low productivity, an inefficient education system and an under-qualified labour pool pose a threat to economic growth and convergence with EU living standards, warns the report. The bank sees the risks in the pace of wage growth, which is outstripping productivity growth. Even with recent wage rises, Bulgarians earn only a third of the income of their counterparts in the rest of the EU while productivity has improved by only two percent since 2002.
