Germany re-unites

German labour productivity has risen sharply since the country’s reunification, according to recent information from the German Federal Statistical Office.

In Germany, labour productivity in the economy as a whole is defined as the quotient of price-adjusted gross domestic product over the number of persons in employment or of person-in-employment hours.

According to the Wiesbaden-based office, labour productivity per person in employment in Germany’s national economy increased by 22.5 percent between 1991 and 2006.

The office also said the more favourable trend in productivity per person-in-employment hour reflects a 7.5 percent reduction in the average number of hours worked by persons in employment.
