Dutch employers organisation AWVN wants to stretch the nine-to-five framework of the ordinary working day and suggest that employees should themselves be given a say on their working hours, within a much wider framework.
AWVN is involved in 500 of the total of 900 collective labour accords (CAOs) between unions and employer organisations or companies in the Netherlands. Within these agreements, increasing labour productivity must be given priority, in the view of Hans van der Steen of AWVN.
AWVN refers to Central Planning Bureau (CPB) projections showing wage-costs for employers rising by over 4 percent this year. At the same time, labour productivity is only seen going up by 1 percent. “That is dangerous,” Van der Steen believes. “Pay can certainly go up structurally, but this must be balanced by a structural improvement in productivity.”
