The NHS productivity unit is helping the health service through the economic downturn but had an initial budget of just £350,000.
NHS chief executive David Nicholson made the decision to set up the unit in March 2009. The unit will work with Strategic Health Authorities and Primary Care Trusts but it will not have the power to direct them to do anything.
Importantly, however, it will have input into next year’s operating framework and tariff decisions and it will advise NHS chief executive David Nicholson and the NHS management board.
