Italy’s dilemma

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, Volume 59, Issue 4

Italy’s Public Administration & Innovation Minister claims that health-care spending could by cut by about one-third by pressing ahead with plans to digitise the medical system, putting all aspects of the system, from prescription to hospital records, on the Internet. The first phases are complete – since January doctors can file notes on employee sickness online. This “e-government” plan is part of a broader revamp of public services began last year by the Minister, Renato Brunetta.

However, the Finance Minister, Giulio Tremonto, thinks that more reforms = more spending and wants to shelve the rest of the plan.
