New York, New York ... so good

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, Volume 59, Issue 8

While the number of manufacturing employees in New York is declining, worker productivity is growing, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.

The state’s manufacturing industry lost 22.6 percent of its jobs between 2001 and 2008, but output increased 14.5 percent during the same period, due to changes in technology. Fed officials credited the productivity improvements to changes in technology as well as changes in trade patterns and consumer tastes.

“Expansion is in niche areas—like specialty foods and customized products—because of the higher value-added to these products”, said Rae Rosen, Assistant Vice President and Senior Economist.
