US manufacturing is now just 13 percent of gross domestic product and is a significantly smaller contributor to wealth than it used to be. In 13 G-20 countries manufacturing adds significantly more to GDP.

However, at $1.8 trillion, annual manufacturing output is still the largest in the world. It tops China’s $1.4 trillion, even though China’s manufacturing sector represents 32 percent of GDP.
