More corn, please

Article Type: From: International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, Volume 61, Issue 4

India ranks fourth in the world in terms of area under corn production at 8.17 million hectares, Minister of State for Agriculture Harish Rawat said recently. USA, China and Brazil have more area under corn than India.

However, productivity of the corn is low in India compared to other counties, the minister added.

Rawat said that while average productivity of corn in India is 2,414 kg per hectare, it is 10,339 kg/hectare in the US and 5,259 kg a hectare in China. Even smaller countries like Indonesia, Mexico and the Philippines which have low acreage under corn have greater crop yield.

Indonesia with 4.16 million hectare under corn has high productivity of 4,237 kg per hectare. Likewise, Mexico with 6.22 million hectares has productivity of 3,237 kg per hectare and the Philippines with 2.68 million hectare under corn has yield of 2,621 kg per hectare.

Rawat said that in order to increase the yield of corn, research on single cross hybrids has been initiated by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and research has also been planned and initiated for development of stress tolerant maize, which can perform better under rainfed conditions.
