Retail demand up by 37 per cent!

Retail demand up by 37 per cent!

In the last year the total in-town demand for space in the UK's Top 50 retail centres has risen by 37 per cent for those seeking prime or good secondary space, and by 15.7 per cent for all retailers, according to the latest FOCUS on Retail Demand report. These gains however, reflect an increase in space per requirement, as the actual number of requirements fell by 1.9 per cent

The average size of trading area required has also risen sharply, with the size of the average in-town requirement growing by 20.7 per cent and the average out-of-town requirement rising even more significantly by 58 per cent.

John Nettleton, senior partner at Donaldsons comments: "The retail market has been volatile during the last year and this "demand data" is therefore of particular importance … While demand in the high streets of the secondary and tertiary towns is falling, the demand for our top towns and cities remains buoyant even if the relative demand in the top 50 towns varies".

Bristol has become the top centre for retail demand in-town and second for out-of-town. Among the top ten regional centres, demand is up by 7.7 per cent overall. Brent Cross enjoyed a substantial increase in demand, while Metrocentre and Meadowhall saw a noticeable decrease.
