This new publication will provide additional support to all those interested in scholarly research on sustainability issues and on practical aspects related to sustainability research projects. The “Handbook of Sustainability Research”, published as volume 20 of the award-winning series “Environmental Education, Communication and Sustainability”, introduces concepts, ideas and methods of sustainability research based on real examples, at the same time allowing the reader to draw some conclusions which may be helpful in his/her future research work.

The first part of the Handbook deals with theoretical aspects of sustainability and refers to theoretical approaches to sustainability research. It considers the various environmental, social, political and economic factors and shows the broad scope of sustainability research based on conceptual and methodological elements.

The second part of the Handbook deals with more practical approaches to sustainability research, offering views and perspectives from various researchers, illustrating how regulations, laws and political frameworks seen in various countries influence sustainability. Many of the described projects show how sustainable issues are intertwined with the environment and society. The third part of the book deals with education for sustainability and presents research and practical projects, showcasing how sustainability research may focus in formal and non-formal education and on aspects which may lead to improvements in the quality of life of communities – including areas such as agriculture and ecotourism.

It demonstrates that sustainability research can offer substantial support towards fostering awareness on sustainable development and that a wide range of education processes, educational approaches and tools may be put to use.

A final section draws the main lessons from the various chapters and some conclusions based on the body of experiences and knowledge gathered by the authors. This Handbook is the first scientific publication directly aimed at supporting the UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), calling among other things for a better understanding of what environmental education and education for sustainability mean.

Due to its nature and international scope, the experiences compiled in this Handbook, it will be to great use to educators, scientists, researchers, politicians, environment activists, teachers and others interested in sustainability and in the implementation of results from sustainability research.
